What actually makes a dog treat “healthy”? In this blog, we talk about how small everyday choices, from functional treats to simple supplements, can support your dog’s long-term wellbeing. And why keeping the treat jar stocked with the right things might be easier than you think.
Go to comment (1)If you’re anything like me, your dog’s treat jar gets opened a lot during the day.
A reward after a walk.
A training moment.
Or sometimes just because they give you that look...you know the one.
Treats are small, everyday moments of love between us and our dogs. But when you think about it, those little snacks can add up over time. If your dog is getting a few treats a day, they become a regular part of their diet.
But what actually counts as a healthy treat? For me, healthy treats tend to come down to a few simple things: real ingredients, minimal processing, and high nutritional value.
That means treats made with ingredients you recognise. Real meat, fish, vegetables and legumes. It means fewer fillers and artificial additives with numbers and codes you don't understand. And my favourite thing about these treats? They do more than just taste good, they genuinely support your dog’s health and longevity.
This is where functional treats have become so exciting.
What Are Functional Treats?
Functional are treats made with ingredients that support a dog’s health in small, everyday ways. Some support digestion and gut health. Others help with joints, skin and coat health, or dental care.
They turn something we already do, giving treats, into small opportunities that support our dogs’ wellbeing.
But treats are only one piece of the bigger picture.

The Health and Wellness Rabbit Hole
Many dog parents are also adding simple wellness supplements into their dog’s routine. Things like bone broth, omega oils, protein sprinkle toppers, and other natural additions that support skin, digestion, joints, and immune health.
It's a lot, I know, and it can start to feel a little overwhelming. I get it.
Once you begin caring about your dogs health and nutrition, suddenly you go down the rabbit hole and there are soooo many things to think about: treats, supplements, grooming, ingredients, sourcing......Often these products, the really good ones, tend to be scattered across different stores and brands and it just becomes tiring to keep up.
Us modern dog owners are busy enough already, so trying to keep up with all of that can feel like a lot.

Keeping the Treat Jar Full
At Ginnabelle’s, we have always believed the goal shouldn’t be to make dog care more complicated. It should be to make it simpler and more consistent with the best quality availble.
Because the truth about health-focused anything, for humans or dogs, is that it only works when it becomes part of a routine.
Dogs don’t benefit from supplements sometimes.
Skin and coat doesn’t improve with grooming occasionally.
Nutrition doesn’t compound without consistency.
That’s exactly why we recently introduced Treats on Tap, our subscription designed to keep your dog’s treat jar stocked with the things that support their daily wellbeing.
Our Treats On Tap collection focuses on health-led products: functional treats, daily wellness supplements, and natural grooming products. Everything has been intentionally curated around premium ingredients and products that offer real, tangible health benefits for your pup.
We are also incredibly proud that everything we stock in this collection comes from local South African suppliers who share the same commitment to quality and care.
For us, it's about making life easier for you, the dog parent, to give your pup the very best, with the least amount of stress.
If we can bring together trusted products in one place, keep the treat jar full, and offer them at a monthly discount, then I do believe we are genuinely helping make consistency and caring for your pup a little easier.
And when it comes to our dogs’ health, those small, consistent choices are often what make the biggest difference.
With love,
Emma, Ginny and George
